On 05/12/08 a courtesy safety inspection of a transfer operation under the control of Ace Stevedoring Company, Inc. was conducted by a Tampa Cooperative Safety Initiative (TCSI) team. One of the stated goals of the TCSI is to recognize contributions to improving safety within the port and to reward those responsible. During the course of the inspection, the Safety Team observed an excellent example of creative thinking put into action. Stacy Gornto, President of Ace Stevedoring, had created and put into use a “safety trailer”. The sole purpose and design of this trailer is to provide a central location of all required safety gear. Its unique design allows for easy recognition of and access to each piece of this gear. A recurring problem noted on other safety inspections is that often safety gear is kept in the vehicle of the site supervisor, and if that supervisor is called away, the safety gear leaves with him. By being on a trailer, Stacy’s design allows not only for easy portability, but the ability to leave the safety gear on scene in the event the supervisor is called away. The ingenuity shown by Stacy is to be applauded and should serve as an example that good safety practices do not have to be complicated in order to be effective. |
